Bad Guy: Badly Drawn, Grumpy and Highly Caffeinated
When we were coming up with a name lots of ideas were floating around, one day Alex sent me (Mandi) an image. It was a crudely drawn take away cup posing as a bad guy (see below). I’d drawn it back when we were running @pearlhackneywick,a doodle for instagram.
Alex said “you know, everyone’s doing good coffee, what if we do bad coffee?” Oh man I dunno, it seems a bit risky. What if people don’t get it? What about the seo? But then I started playing with the design and it was so much fun, we couldn’t not call it bad. And besides, it totally appealed to my “what if” anxieties. All the stuff that clouds your head when entering into something new. Primarily: what if we’re actually bad and people don’t like us?! Well, I suppose the name works in that scenario too. It made me feel a little bit more f*@k it let's just do it. We finally had an identity to run with, and it's suprising how quickly things start to make sense once you figure this out.
OG Bad Guy was especially cude - look at that it's like growing up on The Simpsons season 9 plus then going back and watching the first ever episodes. But way worse.
Back then Bad Guy was into ciggies - he's since proved himself to be a quitter and got a coverup on his "Coffee + Ciggies 4-eva" tattoo, opting for ciggies and Oat Milk instead. He still has a gold tooth, but doesn't really like to show his teeth anymore. He's still got his black coffee tear drop tattoo and skates, but can only go in straight lines, making very very very gradual turns.
